The Audi Arena Oberstdorf ski jumping facility (until 2017 Erdinger Arena , until 2004 ski jumping stadium on the Schattenberg ) is located on the eastern edge of Oberstdorf below the Schattenberg ( Allgäu Alps ). It consists of a HS137 large hill , a HS 106 normal hill, three smaller plastic covered hills and one Grandstand system. The facility is known as one of the venues for the Four Hills Tournament . The first jumping series has been held here since 1953. The home club is the Oberstdorf ski club, the operator is the Skisport- und Veranstaltungs GmbH.

history

Beginnings

The first ski jumping hill (hill on the Halden) existed in Oberstdorf as early as 1909. The hill record reached there was 22 m (by Bruno Biehler ). The area was not ideal for a ski jumping hill, partly because of the strong sunlight. The short run-up and the limited widths caused the Oberstdorf ski club, together with the sports committee of the traffic and health club, to look for a site for a more modern new ski jumping hill. The area to the east of Oberstdorf at the foot of the Schattenberg seemed well suited because the place was mostly in the shade and the property also belonged to the municipality.

1925 to 1941

On December 27, 1925, the Schattenbergschanze, built according to plans by the architect Hans Schwendiger , was opened. As early as 1930 the ski jumping hill was enlarged for the German championships and in 1936 for the qualifying competitions for the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . The hill fell into disrepair during World War II . The last competition took place in 1941.

1946 to 1986

The reopening took place after the reconstruction on January 1st, 1946. On January 4th, 1953, a jumping took place on the Schattenbergschanze for the first time as part of the Four Hills Tournament . The tour with the Oberstdorfer Jumping at the end of December is the most important ski jumping series of the season today.

The old system made of wood, which was adjusted again and again and expanded to K 70, soon no longer did justice to the ever-expanding expanses of the jumpers. In order to be able to offer an alternative alternative location for hosting the ski flying world championships in 1973 on the Heini-Klopfer ski jumping hill, a large K 115 hill made of reinforced concrete and glued wood trusses and the K 56 hill were built.

1987 to 2003

In 1987, as part of the Nordic World Ski Championships, the special and combination competitions were held on the normal and large hill. The wooden tower of the normal hill, now K 90, has been replaced by a tower made of reinforced concrete and glued wood trusses. In 1997 two more small jumps (K 19 and K 30) were built for the youngsters and the large hill received an inclined lift . By the end of 2003 , the K 115 hill for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 was replaced by a new K 120 hill (now HS 137 hill), which cost 16.6 million euros. It should enable greater widths and greater security. Since 2004 all jumps can be jumped with plastic mattings. An FIS Continental Cup jumping competition with matting takes place on the normal hill every summer . The spectator area at the run-out enhances the stadium character through the construction of additional stands . The capacity was increased from 17,000 to 27,000 people.

2004 to 2010

Since December 26, 2004, the ski jumping stadium on the Schattenberg has been officially called the Erdinger Arena . The Erdinger Weißbräu brewery signed a ten-year contract for name sponsoring of the sports facility . This form of sponsorship, previously only known from football stadiums or large sports halls , is a novelty in international skiing. The contract is intended to cover a financing gap of 150,000 euros that the operating company incurs annually through the renovation of the facility. During the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005, however, the stadium was not allowed to be called the Erdinger Arena . Because of the conflict of interests with other sponsors from the brewery industry who financially supported the World Championships and the World Ski Federation FIS, the sports facility was referred to as the World Championships Ski Jumping Arena Oberstdorf during the World Championships . In November 2010 it was decided that the 100 meter hill will be rebuilt in 2011.

Since 2011

Large and normal hill on the Schattenberg (2020)

From April to October 2011 the old 100- to the new 106-meter hill was converted. On October 21st, the new K-95 hill was inaugurated with the German women's national team, the B-team of the Nordic Combined and Oberstdorf junior athletes. The construction costs amounted to around five million euros.

In November 2017 it was announced that the facility would be given a new sponsor name. After 13 years, the cooperation between the Oberstdorf Ski Club and the Erdinger Brewery was ended. The new name giver was officially given by the automobile manufacturer Audi on December 1, 2017 . The new name is Audi Arena Oberstdorf .

In February and March 2021, the third Nordic World Ski Championships will take place in the Audi Arena Oberstdorf .

Others

Martin Schmitt was the first jumper who managed to win three times in a row on the large Schattenbergschanze. He decided in the years 1998-2000 the opening jump of the Four Hills Tournament for himself. So far, only Janne Ahonen has managed to win three times in a row on the converted Schattenbergschanze.

Even if there is no competition, the inrun and tower of the HS 137 ski jump are illuminated at night.

The ski jumping scenes of the film Eddie the Eagle - Everything is possible were filmed at the Schattenbergschanze in 2015 .
