Career

Hicks made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament in 1963/64 . But after he did not make it into the top 30 in any of the competitions and failed completely in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he only achieved 33rd place in the overall ranking. Although he was already in high school at that time, he started as a member of the US team at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . After Hicks landed on rank 41 in jumping on the normal hill, he took 29th place on the large hill together with the Swede Kurt Elimä .

At the Four Hills Tournament 1964/65 that followed in December , Hicks achieved a significant increase in performance, although he only competed in the opening competition. However, on the Schattenbergschanze he surprisingly jumped to third place behind Torgeir Brandtzæg and Pjotr Kowalenko . Although he did not take part in the tour afterwards, he secured 19th place overall.

At the US Championships in 1965 he won gold in individual jumping. A short time later he was 11th at the Holmenkollen at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival .

His most successful tour in terms of the overall ranking was the Four Hills Tournament in 1965/66 . After a mixed jump in Oberstdorf, he made 11th in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and nine in Innsbruck, a jump back to the top of the world. After he achieved a solid result in midfield with 27th place in Bischofshofen, he finished the tour in 13th place overall.

After his active career, Hicks began studying at the University of Minnesota in his hometown of Duluth.
