In the 12th Four Hills Tournament 1963/64 , the jumping took place in Oberstdorf on December 29th, on January 1st the jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and on January 5th the jumping in Innsbruck . The event in Bischofshofen took place on January 6th. The winner was Veikko Kankkonen from Finland. The tour was already fully influenced by the preparations for the 1964 Winter Olympics , for which they met again in Innsbruck barely four weeks later. For this reason, for example, the Norwegian top jumpers Toralf Engan , who won the tour last year, and Torgeir Brandtzæg , who finished fifth last year, did not participate. With the exception of Helmut Recknagel, who was seeded, the German jumpers were also in the middle of the inner-German Olympic qualification, which received far more attention in the German press than the tour. As a result, only Helmut Recknagel and the young jumpers Alfred Lesser , Jürgen von Nordheim and Christoph Rölz from the GDR took part in the two competitions in Austria. For Oberstdorf and Garmisch, the start ban still applied, but the German inner-German Olympic qualification was held on the days before. The favorites were the jumpers from Finland, the Norwegian Holmenkollensieger from 1963, Torbjørn Yggeseth, the Austrian jumpers around Willi Egger as well as the jumpers from the Soviet Union and Poland, of whom Antoni Łaciak won the silver medal on the small hill in Zakopane in 1962 . With 94 participants from 16 countries, a new attendance record was also set.

Oberstdorf

Even after the first round, Yggeseth, considered by many to be the favorite, was ahead. In the second run, however, a foehn wind came up, which caused difficulties for many jumpers and caused falls. Veikko Kankkonen also fell on landing and found himself in 26th place. Despite the domestic German comparison from the previous day, Max Bolkart took an excellent fourth place.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The New Year's jumping was marked by a Finnish dominance. Four jumpers were among the top ten, and there was also a double success. This was achieved with Kankkonen and Halonen, of all people, two jumpers who had fallen in Oberstdorf. Pole Przybyla fought for a strong third place, who was suddenly only 0.5 points behind Yggeseth in the overall standings after sixth in Oberstdorf. The overall ranking had increased enormously due to the New Year's competition, the difference between first and sixth place was not even 6 points. Veikko Kankkonen had already moved up to fifth with his win of the day. From a German point of view, the jumping was anything but optimal. Max Bolkart had to forego a start on the advice of the doctors because of persistent headaches that could be traced back to a fall a week earlier. The best German jumper came in 19th.

In sunshine, the Finn Kankkonen celebrated his second win of the day on his birthday and thus also took the lead in the overall standings. Initially, however, the again strong Pole Przybyla was ahead with a new hill record of 95.5 m after the first round. After shortening the run-up by 2.5 m, however, he could not repeat his performance in the second round and even fell back to third place. West German starters were no longer at the start because of the inner German Olympic qualification as previously planned. For the first time, the small GDR contingent went over the bakken. Helmut Recknagel took seventh place. In the overall standings, everything seemed to be a duel between Kankkonen and Przybyla, as the two were only 1.2 points apart after 3 jumps.

Bischofshofen

The last jump of the tour came up with a few surprises, which in the end had a decisive effect on the overall standings. In fine winter weather the Pole Józef Przybyła caused another bang with a hill record of 100 m. The overall leading Kankkonen, however, only came to 92.5 m. The first Polish tour victory was within reach. In the shadow of this duel was the greatly improved Austrian Baldur Preiml with 99 m, the second largest daily distance. After round 1, the inrun was shortened by three meters. Despite this shortening, Preiml jumped 99 m again and was able to secure the day's victory by a large margin. Kankkonen increased and now jumped 97.5 m, which was enough for 2nd place. Yggeseth and Helmut Recknagel took third place together. Józef Przybyła, on the other hand, touched down at 90 m after a turbulent flight, which meant 41st place in the daily standings. Antero Immonen, who had been third in the overall standings by then, also did not get past 17th place in Bischofshofen.

Total status

Due to the last competition in Bischofshofen, the overall ranking was turned upside down again. Baldur Preiml was able to fight for third place of the tour almost sensationally with his two good jumps in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen, after Innsbruck he was still in 12th place. The Kankkonen - Przybyła duel, which was very exciting up to Innsbruck, came to a dramatic end in Bischofshofen. While Kankkonen once again confirmed his strong form with second place and ultimately became the tour winner with 15 points, the Pole Przybyła literally fell out of the clouds. Due to his failed second round in Bischofshofen, it was only enough for 7th place in the overall ranking. A place in the top twenty would have been enough in terms of the number of points in Bischofshofen to finish on the podium in the overall standings. Przybyła was not alone, however, the Finn Immonen was also passed from 3rd place to 5th place overall due to poor performance in Bischofshofen.
