Peter Müller (born October 25, 1934 in Bischofshofen ; † September 29, 2005 there ) was an Austrian ski jumper .

Career

Müller started skiing at a young age. By the Second World War he had to interrupt his junior career. After the war he came to Nordic skiing as a member of SC Bischofshofen and specialized in ski jumping . As a member of Josef Bradl's training group , he was able to work his way into the Austrian talent squad in the early 1950s.

After he was used as a forerunner in the Four Hills Tournament in 1956/57 , he finally made his international debut in the following Four Hills Tournament in 1957/58 . However, Müller previously secured the Austrian championship title on the Lankschanze in Dornbirn and, a little later, the Salzburg state championship title. In the tour he finally started successfully with a good 19th place on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf . After further good placements, he finished his first tour in 21st place overall.

At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , Müller jumped from the normal hill on March 9th to 56.5 and 58 meters and ended up in 40th place. At the following Four Hills Tournament in 1958/59 , Müller reached 18th place in the overall ranking.

Even in the Olympic winter there were no great successes for Müller. After ranking 21st in the overall ranking of the Four Hills Tournament in 1959/60 , he missed a nomination for the 1960 Winter Olympics . In Kuopio he achieved his best result of the season with sixth place.

From 1961, Müller was able to celebrate successes on an international level again as part of the ÖSV squad. So he and the team won the Kongsberg Cup in Laibach. In the individual, he jumped to fourth place. At the Austrian Championships on 3rd / 4th February 1962 in Bad Goisern he finished third behind Otto Leodolter and Walter Habersatter . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , Müller jumped from the large hill on 89.5 and 94.5 meters and achieved a good 17th place. From the normal hill he could not build on that and only landed on a weak 45th place.

At the Four Hills Tournament in 1962/63 he just barely missed a top 10 placement on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen as 13th. In the end he achieved his best result to date with 18th place in the overall ranking. However, he could not build on this success again in the following season 1963/64. The now 29-year-old won his fourth Salzburg state championship title. However, he missed the breakthrough during the tour and thus, after ranking 31st in the overall ranking, again the qualification for the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .

Despite this failure, Müller surprised at the Four Hills Tournament 1964/65 with two top 10 placements in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Bischofshofen. In the end, he came in sixth overall. A little later he won the title of North American Champion at the jumping in North America. At the beginning of the 1965/66 season, the now 31-year-old Müller had to struggle again with a drop in performance. After only rank 33 in the Four Hills Tournament in 1965/66 , he missed a nomination for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1966 . Shortly thereafter, he ended his active ski jumping career.

Subsequently, Müller became a serviceman at Carrera International and remained loyal to ski jumping until 1987.
