The 7th Four Hills Tournament 1958/59 began this season on December 28th with jumping in Oberstdorf . The jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen followed on New Year's Day . Then the touring caravan moved to Austria, where the jumping in Innsbruck followed on January 4th . The final competition in Bischofshofen took place on January 6th. The tour was again able to win Helmut Recknagel from the GDR. He was the first jumper to do this for the second time. The tour ended tragically for the favorite Finnish jumpers. The reigning ski jumping world champion Juhani Kärkinen could not start due to an injury and after 2 falls in Innsbruck even the third place in the overall standings, Eino Kirjonen, fell hopelessly behind. In the end, no Finn was able to place in the top ten in the overall standings.
Nominee athletes
The mid-season between the 1958 World Championships and the upcoming Squaw Valley Olympics was obviously not that interesting from a sporting point of view. After a steady increase in participating nations, there was a decrease for the first time. In addition, several nations only sent two to three jumpers. With a total of 40 jumpers from the Federal Republic, the GDR and Austria, the total of 57 participants spoke mainly German on the 4 hills.
Oberstdorf
In rainy weather, Helmut Recknagel was able to live up to his favorite role on the Schattenbergschanze. He won from the Finns Kirjonen and Nikolai Schamow from the Soviet Union. The Finns with places 2 and 6 and also the Norwegians with places 4 and 9 immediately showed that they were to be expected after last year's abstinence. But the jumpers from Austria also showed their increased performance with places 5 and 10.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen
On the hill, which was well prepared despite the warm weather, Helmut Recknagel also won the New Year's competition in front of 30,000 spectators. Cross winds and pouring rain made the competition difficult. This time it was mainly the Soviet jumpers, above all Koba Zakadse, Recknagel who contested victory. Four Soviet jumpers were among the ten best jumpers. Harry Glaß gave away a good position in the front field with a fall in the second round. In the overall standings, Recknagel was able to extend his lead over Schamow to almost 15 points.

Like three years ago, there was again little snow. With 20 large transport vehicles and with the help of more than a hundred workers, around 650 cubic meters of snow were brought from Reith near Seefeld to the Bergisel ski jump on New Year's Day in order to prepare the facility. The hill was only released for training one day before the competition. In order to prevent the snow from being washed away by rain, a new method was used and a huge plastic sheet was placed over the runway and landing strip and anchored to the ground at the edges with pegs.
Even before the competition began, jumping had its first upsets. Garmisch's runner-up of the day, Koba Zakadse, crashed during training and had to retire. In addition, Helmut Recknagel had announced a victory on the Bergisel the day before. He succeeded in doing this in front of 20,000 enthusiastic spectators. He relegated the Finns Kankkonen and the Norwegian Woldseth to their places. This made Recknagel the 2 jumpers who achieved 3 victories in a row. Harry Glaß, who fell in Garmisch, took a good 4th place. There was also movement in the overall standings. The up to then third placed Finn Kirjonen fell in both rounds and had to bury his hopes for a podium place with 38th place and more than 60 points behind the winner in the daily standings. Nikolai Shamov also continued to lose ground. In return, the consistent Norwegian Hoel moved up to third place overall. Behind it was the Austrian Walter Habersatter.

Bischofshofen
According to the experts, the 4th day's win for Recknagel was only a matter of form. But, even to the surprise of these experts, in the end a local Austrian stood on the top podium in front of 6,000 spectators. Walter Habersatter decided the jumping in front of the Finn Kirjonen and Nikolai Kamenski from the Soviet Union. Helmut Recknagel fell in the first run after having set the hill record of 96.5 m in the deep snow of the run. Despite a painful bruised rib, he jumped the best distance in the second round and came in 15th place in the daily standings. The up to then overall second Shamov fell in the 2nd round and finished 21st. Max Bolkart was able to record at least one respectable success for the disappointing jumpers from the Federal Republic with the 8th place.

Overall rating
Helmut Recknagel from the GDR was the sovereign overall winner. With 3 day wins he put his stamp on the tour. Despite the fall in Bischofshofen, he won by over 20 points. After the last jump, the ranking was mixed up again. Walter Habersatter achieved the silver rank in the final accounts with his daily victory. At the same time, Nikolai Shamow slipped to fourth place behind the constantly jumping Norwegian Hoel. The Soviet Union, however, had the best team with 4 jumpers in the top ten. Harry Glaß's fall while jumping in Garmisch was fatal. A single-digit placement in the daily ranking of the New Year's event would have been enough for a podium place in the overall ranking. So it was only enough for 10th place.
