The 32nd Four Hills Tournament 1983/84 was a stop of the Ski Jumping World Cup 1983/84 , which was held in Germany and Austria .

The jumping in Oberstdorf took place on December 30th 1983, the jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on January 1st 1984 and the jumping in Innsbruck on January 4th 1984 . The final event in Bischofshofen was held on January 6, 1984.

mode

As in previous years, only the 50 best jumpers from the first round competed for the second round. Due to a new rating system that was more oriented towards the K-point , the number of points fell compared to previous years. In all four competitions, World Cup points were awarded for places 1 to 15 (1st place = 25 points, 2nd place = 20 points, 3rd place = 15 points, from 4th to 15th place 12 points to 1 point, descending).

Nominee athletes

A total of 116 athletes from 18 nations took part in the 4 competitions. Of the long-term participants, only Japan was missing. With Hungary and Spain, two rather exotic jumping nations were also at the start. The ÖSV nominated 15 additional mostly young athletes for the competitions in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen alone.

Venues

Oberstdorf

With changing winds, which made the approach wet and dull and had to be extended in the second run, the ski flying world champion of 1983 Klaus Ostwald and Jens Weißflog celebrated a sovereign double success for the GDR. A total of four GDR athletes placed in the top ten. The sixth place of Thomas Klauser in the opening competition in Oberstdorf, should already be the best placing of a German jumper on this tour.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

After an exciting jump with two hill records, the winner came again from the GDR. First, however, Nykänen led with the new hill record of 104 m. In the second round, however, Jens Weißflog flew another 4.5 m and thus took the lead. Since Nykänen jumped only a disappointing 94.5 m in the second round after missing the jump, it was only enough for him in the end for fifth place. The Swiss Sumi, 56th in Oberstdorf, came in a somewhat surprising second place. In the German DSV team, the press wrote of a crisis after Garmisch's indisputable performance. While Thomas Klauser had halfway fulfilled expectations with sixth place in Oberstdorf, only 2 jumpers had qualified for the second round in Garmisch. Places 31 and 42 jumped out. In the overall standings, Weißflog and Ostwald were now almost unassailable ahead of third-placed Nykänen, with a lead of over 20 points.

innsbruck

15,000 spectators experienced a turbulent jumping in Innsbruck. Because of the fast track, the run-up had to be shortened twice, as the underclass jumpers already jumped well over 100 m. Different wind conditions did not make jumping easier, so that, for example, second in the overall ranking, Klaus Ostwald, found himself in 26th place after the first round. In the second round, however, he jumped a new hill record with 107.5 m, which Jens Weißflog later equalized. As a result, Ostwald moved up to fourth place in the daily ranking. In the German jumpers three athletes qualified for the second run and Peter Rohwein took a good ninth place. In the overall standings, Weißflog extended its lead to a very comfortable 31 points.

Bischofshofen

On Epiphany, Jens Weißflog took his third day win in a row, again with a hill record. With jumps of 114 and 112 meters, he beat the old record of 110.5 m in both rounds. As a result, he won the day's ranking by almost 20 points.

Tour final score

Jens Weißflog from Oberwiesenthal won the tour with superiority and would have exceeded last year's winner Matti Nykänen's record by 9.1 points, even according to the old rating system. Behind the top three, who were the only ones who jumped consistently into the top ten, each jumper had at least one "outlier" upwards. The tragic hero of the tour was the Yugoslav Primož Ulaga, who was definitely one of the broader favorites before the tour. Despite three top ten placements, including a third place in Innsbruck, he was unable to intervene in the overall standings. With a 92nd place in Oberstdorf, all dreams of the podium burst after the first jump.
