Ronald "Ron" Richards (born June 5, 1963 in Oshawa ) is a former Canadian ski jumper .

Career

Richards competed on December 30, 1980, his first jumping in the Ski Jumping World Cup . In the Four Hills Tournament 1980/81 , in which he took part, he remained largely unsuccessful and mostly ended up in the back places. Even for the Four Hills Tournament 1981/82 he could not achieve any top placements. It was not until January 24, 1982 that he achieved his first World Cup points in Thunder Bay with 10th place on the large hill. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 , Richards jumped to 34th place on the normal hill and 20th place on the large hill. In team jumping he reached 5th place together with Horst Bulau and Steve Collins .

In January 1983 he was able to jump into the top ten in both competitions in Lake Placid for the first time and reached 4th and 5th place. The Four Hills Tournament 1983/84 , however, was again unsuccessful. Despite this poor performance, he was nominated for the Olympics shortly afterwards.

At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , Richards jumped to 29th place on the normal hill and 25th place on the large hill. After the games he was able to jump into the top 10 again in Lahti and at the end of the 1983/84 season he reached 49th place in the overall World Cup ranking.

In the following four years, Richards struggled with widely varying results. For example, at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tyrol, he was only set up for jumping on the large hill and came in 30th there. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 1987 he jumped in both competitions, but did not get beyond a 56th place on the normal hill and a 47th place on the large hill.

He was nominated again for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and jumped to 32nd place on the normal hill and 59th place on the large hill. In team jumping he reached 9th place together with Horst Bulau , Steve Collins and Todd Gillman .

For the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , Richards was again in the Canadian team and reached 61st place on the normal hill and 47th place on the large hill. With the World Cup season 1989/90 he reached his best season with the 27th place in the overall standings and several placements among the top ten. As early as the Four Hills Tournament in 1989/90 he was able to jump into the tournament rating for the first time and in the end reached 23rd place. At the ski flying world championship in 1990 he came in Vikersund on the 41st place. The Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 also went surprisingly better than the previous World Championships. In Val di Fiemme he reached the 36th place on the normal hill and 38th place on the large hill.

Richards ended his active ski jumping career when he started at the 1992 Winter Olympics . In Albertville he reached 46th place on the normal hill and 43rd place on the large hill. In the team competition, he reached 14th place with the team.
