The 29th Four Hills Tournament 1980/81 was organized as part of the Ski Jumping World Cup 1980/1981 in Germany and Austria . It took place from December 30, 1980 to January 6, 1981 in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) as well as in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen (Austria). As in the previous year, the 20-year-old Austrian Hubert Neuper won the tour.

mode

As in the previous year, only the best 50 jumpers from the first round competed for the second round. Compared to the previous year, these jumped in the order of their grades and not according to their start numbers. In all four competitions, World Cup points were awarded for places 1 to 15 (1st place = 25 points, 2nd place = 20 points, 3rd place = 15 points, from 4th to 15th place 12 points to 1 point, descending).

Nominee athletes

A total of 111 athletes from 18 nations took part in the 4 competitions. There were four newcomers to the GDR team: Pschera, Zitzmann, Freitag and 16-year-old Jens Weißflog.

Venues

Oberstdorf

In ideal conditions, last year's tournament winner Hubert Neuper achieved the greatest distance in both rounds and won the opening competition of the 29th Four Hills Tournament ahead of the Finn Jari Puikkonen and the Norwegian Roger Ruud. The GDR jumpers had to be satisfied with low grades and had their best man in Thomas Meisinger in sixth place. The Nordic Combined Hubert Schwarz in eleventh place was the best jumper of the German team, which moved into the second round with eight jumpers.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

In almost irregular wind conditions, Horst Bulau, a Canadian, triumphed in a ski jumping competition for the first time. The 18-year-old Bulau, in third place after the first round, achieved the second largest distance with 100.5 m in the second round, which was characterized by nerve-wracking breaks, and won ahead of the Norwegian Per Bergerud, who with 95.5 m the largest width of the first round had achieved. As in Oberstdorf, the German team made it into the second round with eight jumpers and had their best man in the 20-year-old Joachim Ernst. Ernst in second place after the first round, fell back to seventh place after only 91.5 m in the second round. The opposite happened to the Japanese Masahiro Akimoto, who was twelfth after 85.0 m and improved to fifth with a new hill record of 102.0 m in the second round.

The jumping was delayed by a good three hours due to heavy snowfall and subsequent fog. With the longest jump of the first round of 101.0 m, the Finn Jari Puikkonen took the lead. He defended this in the second round in front of Hubert Neuper, who was leading the tour. With the longest jump in the second run of 101.0 m, Armin Kogler improved from eighth to third place.

Bischofshofen

With good conditions in the first round, the Austrian Armin Kogler took the lead by equalizing the hill record. In the second run, drifting snow set in and reduced the approach speed on the natural hill by an average of 10 km / h. Kogler defied the new conditions and won the day ahead of the old and new tour winner Hubert Neuper. The Norwegian Per Bergerud prevented a three-day win for the Austrians with his third place ahead of Hans Wallner. Matthias Buse in sixth place, just like Thomas Meisinger at the start in Oberstdorf, achieved the best placement of a jumper from the GDR on this tour. With Peter Rohwein there was another jumper among the top ten for the German team.

Tour final score

Hubert Neuper narrowly but successfully defended his tour victory from the previous year in front of his compatriot Armin Kogler. Both jumpers managed to place themselves in the top four four times. The Finn Jari Puikkonen only lost contact with the two Austrians in Bischofshofen and came in third. The only German jumper among the top ten was Matthias Buse from the GDR in eighth place.
