Toivonen jumped for the first time as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 in an international jumping competition. However, he was unsuccessful in the Four Hills Tournament. Only in the first competition after the tour could he win his first World Cup points in Sapporo, Japan . In Thunder Bay a week later he reached 9th place, the best placement of his career. He ended the season in 53rd place in the overall World Cup standings.
At the Swedish Championships in 1981 Toivonen won gold on the large hill.
His last international tournament was the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 . Toivonen jumped to 32nd place on the normal hill and 47th place on the large hill. Shortly after the world championship, Toivonen won the gold medal at the Swedish championships in 1982 on the normal and large hill and then ended his active ski jumping career.
