The 34th Nordic World Ski Championships were held from February 19 to 28, 1982 at Holmenkollen in Oslo . The Norwegian capital hosted this event for the fourth time after 1930, 1952 and 1966.
Awarded to Oslo
The contract was awarded at the FIS Congress in May 1979 in Nice .
Innovations
The Nordic combined and ski jumping team competitions were new to the program.
In addition, the defending champion rule now applied. According to this, the winners of 1980 - the Nordic competitions at the Olympic Games were also counted as world championships - were allowed to start outside the usual number of starters per nation (basically four).
Both introductions had been decided in the previous year at the FIS Congress in Puerto de la Cruz - of which the matter of "defending champions" was unanimously at the request of the Austrian Association.
Results
In the nations ranking, Norway was now clearly ahead again after weaker years with seven gold medals. The Soviet Union and Sweden followed significantly behind with two gold medals each. As an individual athlete, v. a. the Norwegian Berit Aunli , who won three gold and one bronze in cross-country skiing.

For the first time there was a simultaneous victory: the jury (two Norwegians, one Finn, one Canadian, and one American) declared Norway and the Soviet Union to be winners after an hour of deliberation. Initially led by the Norwegians, then the Soviets; Final runner Sawjalow started the race 12.9 seconds ahead of Brå. On the climb to the last left bend, Sawjalow climbed the Norwegian on the stick, whereupon the stick broke and the Soviet runner fell. Brå received a replacement stick after about 50 m, but Sawjalow was back at Brå's side again; immediately they passed the goal. According to media reports, the Russian final runner was certain that he was first across the finish line, indicating that the jury was unwilling to give the home country gold.
With regard to 3rd place, Mieto prevailed by a hand's breadth (in the GDR this was described by the fact that Mieto had a larger shoe size). As a result, Finland was only awarded bronze for the time being; accordingly, the GDR was ranked 4th in media reports. The team leadership of the GDR protested against this decision with reference to the award of the two gold medals at the FIS, whereupon the GDR was also awarded a bronze medal some time later.
