Giorgio Vanzetta (born October 9, 1959 in Cavalese ) is a former Italian cross-country skier . His greatest success was relay gold at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer .

Career

Vanzetta won the Italian Youth Championship in 1971. Seven years later he became European champion. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he ran over 15 km in 34th place. He also finished sixth in the relay race with Maurilio De Zolt , Benedetto Carrara and Giulio Capitanio . On January 16, 1982 he made his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup over 15 km in Le Brassus , but narrowly missed the points in 17th place. Less than a week later, with seventh place in Brusson, he reached the points for the first time and was also among the top ten. At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 he crossed the finish line over 30 km in ninth place. In the overall World Cup ranking he achieved his best result of the season of his career a little later after further good points placements with ninth place.

In the winter of 1982/83 Vanzetta did not start in the races in Sarajevo until February . He finished fifth in the second race. In Oslo and Anchorage he missed the points. In the following 1983/84 season , the Italian only started at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. Over 15 km he finished 14th in the finish. Over 30 km he reached the 24th place. After a seventh place with the relay, he was able to run again to 30th place in the final 50 km individual race.

In the 1984/85 season Vanzetta did not start again in the World Cup and was nevertheless given a starting place for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tyrol . Over 30 km he came in a good seventh place. Over the next 15 km he just missed his first world championship medal in fourth.

In March 1986 he started again in the World Cup for the first time in a long time and came in third in Lahti . In Falun , too , he was fifth in the top ten. A little later he finished 12th in the overall World Cup ranking. In the following winter, Vanzetta was not part of the permanent World Cup squad either. It was not used on an international level until the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf . After finishing ninth over 30 km, he ran over 15 km to seventh place. In the relay race he came in fifth together with Albert Walder , Maurilio De Zolt and Marco Albarello . In the World Cup, he narrowly missed a podium again a little later in Falun.

Despite only rare World Cup starts, he was always part of the Italian squad at the following major events. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , he ran over 30 km in classic style in fifth place, before reaching tenth place over 10 km. With the season he landed in fifth place. For the first time he did not start over the final 50 km.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , he ran over 15 km to 13th place. After the World Cup, Vanzetta was used more and more in the World Cup and achieved good top 10 placements. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme , he barely missed another World Championship medal over 15 km with fourth place. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville that followed a year later , Vanzetta celebrated a total of three medals. So he won the bronze medal in the pursuit and over 50 km and the silver medal with the relay. He was also successful with the relay at the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 1993 in Falun and won another silver medal.

At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , Vanzetta won the gold medal ahead of the favored Norwegians in the 4 × 10 km relay with Maurilio De Zolt, Marco Albarello and Silvio Fauner . It was his last major international medal. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 , he just missed a medal in fourth over 50 km. The now 35-year-old Vanzetta was not used in the season.

In the World Cup, Vanzetta remained mostly outside the top 10. In the meantime, he even started in the cross-country Continental Cup . He managed a safe victory over 10 in Campra . Vanzetta contested its last World Cup in December 1997 in Val di Fiemme. Subsequently, he started again in FIS races and in the Continental Cup, before ending his active cross-country skiing career with a start in the Marathon Cup over 70 km in Predazzo in January 2002.

At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he and his former team-mate Silvio Fauner were among the official torchbearers at the opening ceremony.

In the later years it became known that Vanzetta was one of the clients of the Italian EPO researcher Francesco Conconi . However, doping could no longer be proven.

Vanzetta's younger sister Bice Vanzetta was also successful as a cross-country skier and won two Olympic medals.
