Kristen Skjeldal (born May 27, 1967 in Voss ) is a Norwegian cross-country skier .

Career

Kristen Skjeldal is a trained carpenter and starts for the Bulken IL association . In March 1989 he started for the first time in Falun in the cross-country skiing world cup . In the 30-kilometer race, with seventh place, he immediately placed in the top ten. In 1991 the Norwegian took part in a Nordic World Ski Championships for the first time in Val di Fiemme . In the race over 15 kilometers he was seventh. In the first race after the World Championships in Lahti over 30 kilometers, he won his first and only race in the World Cup. 1992 Skjeldal started in Albertville for the first time at the Olympic Games. He finished 38th over ten kilometers and 20th over 50 kilometers. With the Norwegian relay, which included Terje Langli , Vegard Ulvang and Bjørn Dæhlie , he won the gold medal. Two years later in Lillehammer , Skjeldal was 18th over 30 kilometers.

For the next ten years, Skjeldal has always been among the best in the world. The best result at a world championship was sixth place over 50 kilometers at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Ramsau in 1999 . After he was unable to qualify for the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano against strong national competition , he started in three races in Salt Lake City in 2002 after winning the Norwegian titles over 10 and 15 kilometers . The greatest success was winning the relay competition with Anders Aukland , Frode Estil and Thomas Alsgaard . The greatest individual success was winning the bronze medal in the 30 km freestyle behind the Austrians Christian Hoffmann and Michail Botwinow . He benefited from the revocation of the gold medal of the convicted doping sinner Johann Mühlegg .

Since 2006 Skjeldal started less often in international competitions. His last World Cup start was in March 2008 at Holmenkollen In Oslo over 50 kilometers, where he finished 15th. In the following years he started several times in FIS races as well as in the Norwegian championships and was able to achieve some notable placements. At the Norwegian championships in 2012, when he was almost 45 years old, he took an excellent 8th place over 50 kilometers and was able to leave several active world cup runners behind. His last start so far was in April 2016 at the Norwegian Championships in Beitostølen .

Skjeldal won several national individual championship titles as well as several medals in team competitions with the Bulken team, including the silver medal in 1996 . He started 148 times in individual World Cup races and made it onto the podium eleven times. His brother Gudmund Skjeldal also started internationally for Norway. Gudmund wrote a biography, Den siste langrennaren , about his brother.
