Tore Ruud Hofstad (born August 9, 1979 in Eidsvoll ) is a Norwegian cross-country skier who specialized in the sprint disciplines and short distances.

Career

Hofstad made his international debut at the 1997 World Junior Championships in Canmore . There he won the bronze medal with the relay. At the Junior World Championships in Pontresina in 1998 , he ran the 10 km freestyle in eleventh place. With the relay he won the silver medal there. A year later at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1999 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer , he achieved his first top 10 result over 10 km in classic style with ninth place. Four days later he secured the silver medal over 30 km.

For the 1999/2000 season Hofstad started for the first time in international FIS races in Norway and Sweden. In January 2000 he finally made his debut in the cross-country skiing Continental Cup . He succeeded in the second race in Nybygda as 22nd for the first time the run in the points. At the Norwegian Championships in 2000 , he was clearly behind the competition. Despite this failure, he made his debut in the Cross-Country World Cup a week later in Trondheim . As the 44th he was unable to keep up with the competition and clearly missed his first World Cup points.

It was not until the beginning of the 2001/02 World Cup season in Ramsau am Dachstein that he managed to get into the points for the first time with 27th place in the 30 km mass start. In January 2002 he narrowly missed a podium at the World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě and crossed the finish line in fourth. Despite this success, Hofstad remained in the B squad and thus in the Continental Cup. In Val di Fiemme he achieved third place twice and thus two good podium finishes.

In March 2002 Hofstad was used again in the World Cup and ran over 15 km in Lahti in third place on the podium for the first time. He also took part as a team member in the following relay race and finished fourth with the team. A little later he finished his first World Cup season in 37th place in the overall World Cup standings. Also in the following season 2002/03 he started with good results in the points. In Nové Město na Moravě he celebrated his first World Cup victory with the Norwegian relay. A little later he started in Val di Fiemme at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 . There he surprised the competition with good mileage and secured the silver medal in the 2 × 10 km double pursuit. With the season he ran away from the competition a little later and won the gold medal. In the final race over 50 km he was 34th. At the end of the season he was again eleventh in Lahti. In the last World Cup race of the season with the relay, he was fourth again.

At the Norwegian Championships in Trondheim in 2003, he narrowly missed his first national medal as fourth in the double pursuit. In the 2003/04 season Hofstad started with two ninth places in Beitostølen . At the same place he ran over 15 km for the first time in a single race on a World Cup podium. In the following relay race he ran with the team to second place. But after he was unable to build on his successes in the following weeks, he went back to the B-squad for a few races in the Continental Cup in January. After two wins in Valkeakoski , however, he quickly returned to the senior team. In Oberstdorf he ran into the World Cup points again. With the relay he secured a podium again with second place in Umeå . At the end of the season he ran over 30 km in Pragelato back to fourth place and finished the season a little later in 36th place overall.

At the beginning of the 2004/05 season Hofstad won another World Cup race with the relay in Lago di Tesero . A little later he won his first national title at the Norwegian Championship in Lillehammer . At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 in Oberstdorf , he and his partner Tor Arne Hetland secured gold in the team sprint. Shortly before, he had secured the world title with the Norwegian relay for the second time since 2003. In the individual over 15 km he also ran on the bronze rank. Hofstad closed the season in March with a relay win in Falun .

On November 27, 2005, Hofstad celebrated his first and only World Cup victory in his career in Kuusamo, Finland . At his first Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 , the Norwegian only started in the relay race and finished fifth together with Jens Arne Svartedal , Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset and Frode Estil .

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , Hofstad finished second in Gällivare for the last time on an individual World Cup podium. Only in the season he was able to secure podiums and victories. For the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo he was not nominated for the squad. In spite of this, he ended the 2006/07 season as his most successful in 31st place in the overall World Cup standings. As a result, he was only able to draw attention to himself in relay races. Although he regularly won points in individual races, there were no major successes. In the 2008/09 season he had to pause for the most part after he was found to be infected with Chlamydophila pneumoniae .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he and the team won the gold medal for the third time. In the individual pursuit over 30 km he had previously run 34th. He was registered for the final 50 km race, but did not start.

After the World Cup, he was no longer used in the World Cup. In July 2010, he officially retired from professional business. Only in the Scandinavian Cup and the Marathon Cup did he start irregularly until 2012, but could no longer prevail against the young competition. For 2012 he was planning an official comeback. With a start at the Norwegian Championship 2013 in Gaasbu , where he ran over 15 km in 41st place, a return to the national team was still excluded. However, he continued to compete in local and regional races. In 2013 he also won the race in Sjusjøen .

From June 2014 he will be part of the ParquetPartner cross-country team.
