Eldar Rønning (born June 11, 1982 in Trondheim ) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier . He starts for the Skogn IL ski club and specializes in classic technique races.

Career

At the Junior World Championships in 2001 in Karpacz , Poland , Rønning was 18th in the sprint. A year later at the Junior World Championships in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , he finished fourth in the race over 30 kilometers in the classic technique, just missing a medal just behind his compatriot Eivind Juul Pedersen . Over ten kilometers in the free technique he finished 13th.

Eldar Rønning's first major success was in the 2004/05 season. He won the sprint in Reit im Winkl and achieved two more podium places in sprint World Cup races . In the overall World Cup this season he was 10th and in the Sprint World Cup 2nd behind his compatriot Tor Arne Hetland . At the 2005 World Championships he was eleventh in the sprint in Oberstdorf .

In the 2005/06 season he focused almost exclusively on the Sprint World Cup. He only contested one distance race over 15 km classic, which he finished 30th. Things went better in the sprint races, where he was able to take a third and two fifth places. At the end of the season these results reached position 7 in the Sprint World Cup and position 11 in the overall World Cup.

The 2006/07 season began for him with a win at the World Cup opener in Düsseldorf . After that he was able to celebrate two more victories over the 15 km classic in Kuusamo and Cogne . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 he won the bronze medal in the sprint and, together with Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset , Lars Berger and Petter Northug, the gold medal in the 4x10 km relay. Over 30 kilometers he was twelfth and in the 50 kilometer race he finished 27th. He was also a member of the victorious Norwegian relay team at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec . He was also seventh over 15 kilometers and 28th over 30 kilometers. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Canada , it was only used over 30 kilometers and finished there in 36th place.

At the 2011 home world championships in Oslo , he finished second behind Matti Heikkinen over 15 km in classic style and won the world championship title for the third time in a row with the Norwegian cross-country relay. At the 2013 World Championships in Fiemme Valley , Italy , the fourth consecutive title followed with the cross-country relay. A feat previously only achieved by his compatriot Bjørn Dæhlie in the 1990s and with him Petter Northug , who then expanded the record to five consecutive titles in 2015. Over 50 kilometers he was fifth while he finished the skiathlon in 32nd. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia , he was fourth behind France and narrowly missed the Olympic gold in the Norwegian cross-country relay. Over 15 kilometers in the classic technique, he was twelfth.

At the beginning of 2016 he announced the end of his career.
