Alexander Alexandrowitsch Sawjalow ( Russian Александр Александрович Завьялов , scientific transliteration Aleksandr Aleksandrovič Zav'jalov ; born June 2, 1955 in Moscow ) is a former Soviet / Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Sawjalow first appeared internationally at the 1978 Winter Universiade in Špindlerův Mlýn . There he won the gold medal over 30 km and with the relay. In 1980 he won the bronze medal over the 50 kilometers classic at the Olympic Winter Games , which were also held as World Championships. In early March 1980 he won the Lahti Ski Games over 15 km. The following year he came second at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival over 50 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1982 he won the silver medal over the 15 kilometer freestyle behind the Norwegian Oddvar Brå . In the relay competition he finished with his team and the simultaneous Norwegians first place. Two years later Sawjalow won two silver medals at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . Over the 30 kilometers freestyle he was only defeated by his compatriot Nikolai Simjatow . In the relay competition, the Soviet team narrowly lost to the Swedish relay. In addition, Sawjalow won the overall ranking of the cross-country skiing world cup in 1981 and 1983 . At Soviet championships he won twice with the relay (1979, 1982) and once over 30 km (1983).
