Ivar Formo

Ivar Formo (born June 24, 1951 , † December 26, 2006 in the forest area Nordmarka near Oslo ) was a Norwegian cross-country skier .

life and career

At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he won bronze over 15 km and the silver medal with the 4x10 km relay. In 1976 in Innsbruck he won Olympic silver again with the 4x10 km relay and became Olympic champion over 50 km. In addition, he won with the relay in 1974 in Falun and 1978 in Lahti each World Cup bronze. He finished the 1973/74 season as the winner of the first ever, then unofficial cross-country skiing world cup . In 1975 he was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal .

Formo was also successful in orienteering and won the bronze medal with the relay at the 1974 World Championships.

In 1976 he won the Norway Sportsman of the Year election and the Morgenbladet gold medal . .

Ivar Formo collapsed in the ice on a skate tour on December 26, 2006 on Lake Store-Sandungen and drowned.
