Frode Estil (born May 31, 1972 in Lierne , Nord-Trøndelag ) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier . He was considered one of the world's best cross-country skiers in classic style. With the exception of the pursuit races, half of which are run in freestyle , Estil achieved all of his successes in this running technique.

Career

In 1999, Estil won his first World Cup race , a 30 km run in Davos . In the course of his career, three more wins, six second places and eight third places followed. His best placement in the overall World Cup he achieved in the 2001/02 season when he was fifth.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics , Estil won gold in the 20 km pursuit race and with the relay, as well as silver over 15 km. He finished the pursuit race at the same time as Thomas Alsgaard in second place. But winner Johann Mühlegg was convicted of doping and disqualified by the IOC in February 2004 . Alsgaard and Estil both received the gold medal. A silver medal in the 30 km pursuit race was added at the 2006 Winter Olympics . Shortly after the start, he fell after a ski break, began to catch up from last place to the top and lost only 1.6 seconds to the winner Yevgeny Dementiev .

At the 2001 World Cup , Estil won silver over 30 km, and bronze over 15 km and 30 km at the 2003 World Cup . At the 2005 World Cup he won the bronze medal in the 30 km pursuit race and became world champion over 50 km. He won his last medal at the 2007 World Cup in Sapporo when he finished 50 km second.

After the 2006/07 season, Estil ended his World Cup career. But he still competes in FIS races and in the Marathon Cup .

In 2007 he was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal . He lives in Meråker , is married and has a son.
