history

Hudiksvall is the second oldest city in Norrland after Gävle and received city rights from John III in 1582 . awarded. Due to its port and stacking rights , the city grew rapidly and was Norrland's second largest city by 1630. But the loss of the advantageous trade privileges in 1836 led to slow stagnation. In 1721 Hudiksvall was burned down by Russian troops. After that, the city recovered only slowly. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that there was a more rapid upswing when Hudiksvall became Norrland's most important export port for wood products. After a fire in 1792, the district of Fiskarstaden was created, today one of the best preserved districts of that time. Another major fire in the 1870s destroyed large parts of the city, which were rebuilt in a checkerboard plan. From this time there are districts with a uniform wooden architecture. A number of representative urban buildings were also erected.
