Coordinates: 61 ° 44 ′  N , 17 ° 6 ′  O Hudiksvall is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Gävleborgs län and the historic province of Hälsingland . The main town of the municipality is Hudiksvall .

The European route 4 and the Gävle - Sundsvall railway line run through the municipality .

geography

The municipality stretches about 50 kilometers along the Baltic Sea coast and follows the course of the Svågan River for about 90 kilometers to the northwest inland.

In the center of the municipality are the lakes Norra Dellen and Södra Dellen , which are located in a basin with a diameter of approx. 22 km that was created by a meteorite impact approx. There is also the place Delsbo, the center of an agriculturally intensively used area with more than 20 villages.

The coast is very indented and there are numerous islands in front of it. The town of Hudiksvall is located on the Hudiksvallsfjärden Bay, while the important industrial town of Iggesund is about ten kilometers south at the mouth of the Delångersån in the Gulf of Bothnia .

history

The city was founded in 1582 by King John III. Founded by Sweden , who relocated the people of Hudik to the coast.

The city burned down around a dozen times in its history. The most significant damage was caused by the Russians in 1721. Only the church survived this fire. Hudiksvall got the current street layout in 1792 after another fire.

economy

The main town forms an important service center. After the municipal administration, the Provincial Parliament of Gävleborgs län is the second largest employer. Industry also plays an important role. In addition to operations in Hudiksvall, Iggesund is an important industrial center ( Iggesund Paperboard AB and Iggesund Timber AB ).
