Two weeks later, on March 7, 1982 in Lahti , he finished third over 50 km on a podium for the first time. At the following World Cup in Oslo, he finished seventh among the top ten.

Also in the following season 1982/83 as well as in the following year he got good results, so that he drove with good performances to the Olympic Winter Games 1984 in Sarajevo . Over 15 as well as over 30 km he landed in ninth place before he reached seventh place with the relay. In the final 50 km race, he finished 22nd.

The following January De Zolt ran third in the Nordic World Ski Championships 1985 over 15 km in Seefeld in Tyrol on a podium. Over 50 km the race went even better for him, so that he could win silver in the end. He also secured the silver medal with the relay.

Two years later he won the 50 km title in free technique at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 1987 . Before that, he had only finished 14th over 15 km.

At the following Olympic Winter Games in Calgary in 1988 he won silver over 50 km behind Gunde Svan . He also achieved a top 10 rank in each of the other disciplines.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , De Zolt remained without a medal for the first time. He was also without a medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme . The best result was fourth place with the relay.
