Nové Město na Moravě (German: Neustadtl ) is a town in the Czech Republic in the Vysočina region ten kilometers east of the former district town of Žďár nad Sázavou .

name of the city

The Czech name "Nové Město" and the German name "Neustadtl" are translations of the Latin "Nova Civitas". Because several cities and districts in the German and Czech-speaking regions had these names, the Nové Město in Moravia was given the addition "na Moravě" in Czech. It means “in Moravia”. In German, the distinction was made in the diminutive form “-stadtl” for “-stadt”. In more recent German literature, the German name for Nové Město na Moravě is also "Neustadt".

geography

Nové Město na Moravě is located on the southern edge of the Žďárské vrchy ( Saar Mountains ) in the eastern part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands in western Moravia on the upper reaches of the Bobrůvka river . To the north of the city is the Ochozawald, in the west of the Harusův kopec (741 m) and the Šibenice (706 m).

history

Neustadtl Castle

The place was founded around 1250 by Boček von Jaroslavice and Zbraslav († 1255), the founder of the Cistercian monastery Saar . The first written mention was made in 1267 as "Bočkanov" in a document of the Olomouc bishop Bruno von Schauenburg , in which he confirmed the tithe claims to the monastery from the former estates of Boček from Jaroslavice and Zbraslav. In 1293 the place was first referred to as a town under the name "Nova Civitas" in a document of Wenceslas II and was under the jurisdiction of the monastery. With the death of Smil von Obřany in 1312, the lineage of Boček von Jaroslavice and Zbraslav in the male line went out and their goods fell to the lords of Leipa . Subsequently, the city developed into the center of a rule. In 1482 Wilhelm II von Pernstein took over the rule as guardian of Pertold von Leipa's posthumous son Heinrich and bought it from him in 1495. In 1499 Neustadtl was given the privilege to hold two annual markets. In 1500 Wilhelm von Pernstein divided the rule into the shares Neustadtl and Ingrowitz . Under Johann von Pernstein the separation of the Ingrowitz rule began.

During the reign of the Lords of Pernstein , the city reached its greatest boom during the Renaissance . In 1564 the city took over part of the debt from Vratislav von Pernstein , who in return granted it extensive self-government. After Vratislav's death, his sons Jan and Maximilian von Pernstein sold the owed rule to Wilhelm Dubský von Třebomyslice, who made Neustadtl Castle his seat. In 1603 Dubský also bought the Ingrowitz estate. After the Battle of the White Mountain , Dubský's goods were confiscated in 1624 because of their participation in the class uprising and sold to Cardinal Franz Xaver von Dietrichstein , who had already acquired the goods of the Saar monastery in 1616 . His inheritance fell to his brother Maximilian in 1636, who leased the estate to the administrator Simon Kratzer von Schönsberg in 1638. Kratzer was shot in 1645 when the Swedes attacked Neustadtl. His son Franz Maximilian Kratzer von Schönberg built several iron works and hammers in the Saar mountains. In 1660, Kratzer bought the rule. When he died in 1679, he left behind large debts and the rule went into the administration of one of the main creditors, Prince Ferdinand von Dietrichstein . His son Leopold left the rule in 1699 to the aristocratic Maria Schul family in Brno . In the 18th century, the women's monastery initiated another colonization of the Saar mountains.

After the abolition of patrimonial Nové Město / Neustadtl became the seat of a district administration and a judicial district in Moravia from 1850. With the construction of the line from Tišnov (Tischnowitz) to Žďár nad Sázavou (Saar) in 1905, the city received a connection to the railway network. In 1906, to distinguish between “Moravian New Town”, then and now in Czech Uničov , the previous Czech city name “Nové Město” (German: New Town) was expanded to Nové Město na Moravě (German: “New Town in Moravia”). The city lost its status as a district town in 1949 and became part of the Okres Žďár nad Sázavou .
