Bystřice nad Pernštejnem (German Bistritz ob Pernstein , older also Wistritz ) is a town with 8444 inhabitants on the Bystřice in the Vysočina region in the Czech Republic . The town received the addition of nad Pernštejnem in 1925.

Etymology of the place name

The place was founded on the river Bystřice (torrent or torrent). The place name was later given an addition to distinguish it from other communities with the same name. This addition indicates the long history of belonging to the Pernstein family . Pernštejn Castle is only about eleven kilometers south. For a long time the description "blíž hradu Pernštejna" (near the Pernštejn castle) was used.

Since 1881 the place name was Města Bystritz ob. Pernstein - Bystřice nad Pernštýnem . Since 1925 the name suffix has been nad Pernštejnem .

history

The town was founded in the 13th century by the Pernstein family , first mentioned in a document in 1298, but which refers to an older document from 1238. Over time, Bystřice became the administrative and commercial center of the region. In 1348 it was elevated to the status of a town and 110 years later the market rights were granted.

After the Pernsteiners died out, the town changed hands several times and the flourishing economy came to a standstill. During the Thirty Years War the city was completely devastated.

In the 19th century there was a renewed boom when craftsmen settled in the city. In modern times, economic activity flourished with the connection to the railway line in 1905 and uranium mining at the end of the 1950s.

population

Development of the population

With the start of uranium mining in the area, there was also strong demand for housing in Bystřice nad Pernštejnem from the mid-1950s, so two new settlements were built. As a result, the population rose to around 8,600.

The following population figures were reported for the years around the turn of the millennium:

date Residents
1994 9,304
2000 9,195
2005 8,949
2007 8,793

There is a small surplus of men (2000 census). In the period from 1995 to 2007 the birth balance was positive, which means that almost all of the births were more than the number of deaths.

Religious affiliation

  • Non-denominational: 40.4%
  • Member of a religious community 43.5%
    • Roman Catholic: 37.3%
    • Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brothers: 3.6%

The numbers are, however, fraught with a certain degree of uncertainty, as in 16.1% of the cases the religious affiliation is unclear.

coat of arms

The oldest known imprint of the municipal coat of arms dates from 1490. It shows the Moravian eagle . As part of the town elevation, the municipality was assigned a new coat of arms in 1590, it is still used today in its unchanged form. The golden background is divided into two fields by a blue vertical bar. In the right field there is the right half of an aurochs head with a golden nose ring, the left field shows the left half of an eagle looking to the left.
