Vranov nad Topľou (before 1927 and from 1944 to 1969 Vranov ; German Frö (h) nel / Vronau an der Töpl , Hungarian Varannó ) is a city in eastern Slovakia .
geography
Vranov is located near Kaschau ( Košice ) and Prešov in the north-western foothills of the Eastern Slovakian Plain in the upper part of Semplin between the rivers Töpl ( Topľa ) and Ondau ( Ondava ). It is divided into the actual city of Vranov and the place Čemerné (incorporated in 1970).
history
middle Ages
The place was in 1270 for the first time in a deed of foundation of the Hungarian king Stephen V mentioned. The medieval settlement of Vranov was part of the Čičva castle estate owned by the nobleman Rainold. Benefiting from its location on the trade route to Eperies, the city became a market town, where handicrafts developed alongside trade. In a document from King Sigismund from 1410, the place is described as a city. A mayor and jury were at the head of the municipal self-government . King Matthias granted the city several privileges in 1461: toll and storage rights, as well as fair rights . The first guilds arose here in the 16th century. The shoemaker's guild is one of the oldest in Semplin. During this time, a humanistic high school was built in the city.
Modern times
The peasant uprising of 1831 was put down here. In the second half of the 19th century, Vranov became a district seat with 44 parishes. At the turn of the century there was a great wave of emigration and the city was connected to the railway network in 1903, and electrical lighting and telephones were introduced (1906).
City arms
The city coat of arms is a representation of a lion with a saber. The original stamp represented the figure of Saint Stephen. The city began to use the heraldic coat of arms as it is today in 1622.
Attractions
The city has the late Gothic Roman Catholic basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary (1441, rebuilt in 1578 and 1718), a Baroque Pauline monastery (1718), a neo-Gothic Evangelical Church (1930-1935), a Reformed Church (1910), and a synagogue (1923 ) and a classical mansion.
Čemerné
The Greek Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built from 1905 to 1910 in the Hungarian secessionist architectural style based on designs by the architect E. Lechner.
