Michalok (German also Michalock , Hungarian Felsőmihályi - until 1907 Mihalko ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 283 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Vranov nad Topľou , part of kraj Prešovský lies and traditional landscape Zemplín belongs .
geography
The village is located on the southern edge of the Low Beskids , more precisely on the edge of the Ondavská vrchovina mountain range , on the upper course of the Čičava brook . The center of the village is at an altitude of 256 m nm and is 12 kilometers from Vranov nad Topľou .
history
Michalok was first mentioned in writing in 1287 as Myhaly (other sources only give it as Myhalkfalua in 1363 ).
In 1787 there were 42 houses and 361 inhabitants, in 1828 50 houses and 366 inhabitants. The main source of income was and is agriculture.
In 1899, German farmers from the Tachau area in Bohemia settled here. They were trained carpenters, many of them worked in the mercury mine in neighboring Merník . In 1944 the German residents were expelled.
Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 320 people living in Michalok, including 307 Slovaks. 13 residents did not answer. 190 residents professed to the Roman Catholic Church, 107 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, eight residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Reformed Church. With 14 inhabitants the denomination is not determined.
