procedure

Initial investigations suggested that the Mondotravel bus hit the end of a traffic jam in front of the toll station at Avellino . 7 cars were pushed into each other. Then he scratched a concrete wall, broke through a guardrail and fell into a 30 meter deep ravine.

The salvage work was very difficult due to the rugged and wooded slopes. The survivors were taken to hospitals in the area. The tour group was on their way back on a pilgrimage from Telese Terme to Naples . The bus driver's body was turned over to forensic medicine for further investigation.

Further research opened up a theory that the brakes on the 18-year-old bus might have been defective. Grinding marks on the guardrail, which extend over several hundred meters, as well as oil and gear remains on the motorway suggest that the bus driver may have tried to slow the bus using the engine brake and sheet metal brakes .
