Slovenská Kajňa (until 1927 Slovak and "Slovenská Kajna"; Hungarian Alsónyírjes - until 1907 Tótkajnya ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 749 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which in Okres Vranov nad Topľou of, part Prešovský kraj , and belongs to the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The municipality is located on the southern edge of the Low Beskids in the Ondava Valley , at the southern end of the Malá Domaša reservoir, just before the mouth of the Kvakovský potok in the Ondava. The center of the village is at an altitude of 147  m nm and is 16 kilometers from Vranov nad Topľou .

Neighboring communities are Kvakovce in the north, Malá Domaša in the north-east and east, Benkovce in the south, Vyšný Kazimír in the south-west, Merník in the west and again Kvakovce in the north-west.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1334, according to other sources in 1323 as Kanya . In 1363 it was part of the Čičava Castle estate , after which it was mainly owned by various low-nobility families, in the 17th century the village belonged to the estate of the Vranov Hospital. Around 1600 Slovenská Kajňa was a medium-sized village with 20 inhabited subjects' houses. Plague epidemics and Kuruzzen uprisings in the late 17th and early 18th centuries devastated the area, so that reconstruction could only begin after the Peace of Sathmar. In 1828 there were 55 houses and 410 inhabitants, most of whom were employed as farmers. From 1880 there were several waves of emigration due to persistent poverty.

Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

population

According to the 2011 census, Slovenská Kajňa had 789 inhabitants, 777 of whom were Slovaks , two Czechs and one Ukrainian . Five residents indicated a different ethnic group and four residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

719 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 38 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, seven residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Evangelical Methodist Church and the Reformed Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 10 residents had no denomination and the denomination was not determined for nine residents.
