Chad Haga (born August 26, 1988 in McKinney , Texas ) is an American cyclist .

Athletic career

In 2006, Chad Haga began competitive cycling while riding for the team at what was then his university. In 2010 he completed his engineering degree. In August 2011 he got his first contract with the Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies team . In June 2012, he fell on the Tour de Beauce and seriously injured his knee. Not long afterwards, Haga, who is also an excellent piano player, broke a bone in both hands in the McKenzie Pass Road Race . Despite pain in his hands, he finished the three-stage race and was only given the diagnosis after the race. In 2013 he won the Joe Martin Stage Race as well as a stage of the Tour of Elk Grove

On January 23, 2016, Chad Haga - like his teammates Max Walscheid , Warren Barguil , Ramon Sinkeldam , John Degenkolb and Fredrik Ludvigsson - was injured in an accident during a training drive near Calpe, Spain . Of all the drivers, Haga suffered the most severe wounds; his veins and arteries were damaged and he had a ruptured eye socket. Haga started the Giro d'Italia in May 2016 and finished the tour as 78th.

In July 2017, Haga won the tough American hill climb Bob Cook Memorial Mount Evans Hill Climb .

In 2018, the American finished seventh in the time trial of the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia , 47 seconds behind. In addition, at the national championships, Haga finished second in the time trial 28 seconds behind Joey Rosskopf . Furthermore, he competed in the season for the first time in his career, the Tour de France , which he finished in 72nd place in the helper role for Tom Dumoulin .
