The 72nd Vuelta a España 2017 took place from August 19 to September 10, 2017. Leading to the Grand Tours belonging tour was part of the UCI World Tour 2017 . It ran through Spain , France and Andorra .

The overall winner for the first time was four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome with a 2:15 minute lead over Vincenzo Nibali . Froome took over the red jersey of the overall leader on the third stage and defended it to the finish in Madrid . He also just won the points classification against the four-time winner of the day Matteo Trentin by sprinting on the final day and finishing eleventh of the day. Froome also won the combined classification. The mountain classification winner was Davide Villella . The junior ranking won the overall eighth Miguel Ángel López . The team competition was won by the Astana Pro Team . Alberto Contador contested his last bike race, won the mountain finish on the Alto de Angliru , was fifth overall and honored as the most combative driver of the tour.

In December 2017 it became known that Froome had submitted a doping sample during the Vuelta 2017, in which the limit value for the substance salbutamol was exceeded. This was the result of joint research by the Guardian and Le Monde ; the world cycling association UCI confirmed the result of the test. Froome said it was well known that he had asthma . This got worse during the Vuelta, which is why he increased the dose of salbutamol on the advice of the team doctor. However, he was careful not to exceed the permissible dose. The limit value of the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA for salbutamol is 1000 nanograms per milliliter (ng / ml). A concentration of 2000 ng / ml was detected in Froome. Shortly before the start of the Tour de France 2018 , the disciplinary commission of the Union Cycliste Internationale decided not to open doping proceedings against him after reviewing extensive documents submitted by Froome.

  • The leader of the overall standings wears the red jersey . As always in international stage races, the overall ranking results from the addition of the times driven. In addition, there is a time bonus for the stages - apart from the time trial stages 10, 6 and 4 and for the intermediate sprints 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
  • As in the Tour de France, the leader in the points classification wears the green jersey . The scoring results from the addition of the points at the finish of each stage and the intermediate sprint, which is also carried out on each stage. There is no intermediate sprint in the time trial, whether team or individual.
  • The leader in the mountain classification wears the blue-dotted jersey .
  • The leader in the combined classification wears the white jersey . The combined ranking results from the placements in the overall ranking, points ranking and mountain ranking. The driver with the fewest ranking points is the leader of this special classification.
  • At every stage, with the exception of team and individual time trials, the most active rider is awarded by an independent jury. He receives the red number and wears it on the next stage.
