Fabio Aru (born July 3, 1990 in San Gavino Monreale ) is an Italian road cyclist . He achieved his greatest success so far with the overall victory at the Vuelta a España 2015 .
Career
After Aru won the Italian stage races Giro delle Valli Cuneesi , Toscana-Terra di Ciclismo and twice the Giro della Valle d'Aosta in 2011 and 2012 , he joined the Kazakh UCI ProTeam Astana in 2013 . With this team he achieved his breakthrough at the Grand Tours in 2014 : He won a mountain stage at the Giro d'Italia , which he finished third, and two mountain stages at the Vuelta a España , where he came fifth. A year later he won two mountain stages and the junior competition at the Giro d'Italia and finished the tour in second behind Alberto Contador , 1:53 minutes behind. For one day, Aru had led the overall standings at the Giro.
In September 2015 Aru started at the Vuelta a España . During the 11th stage he wore the red jersey of the overall leader and initially kept it for five days before he had to hand it over to Joaquim Rodríguez and later Tom Dumoulin . Only on the last mountain stage did Aru and his team launch the decisive attack on Dumoulin, which put the Italian in the lead again and ultimately led to his first victory in a Grand Tour.
In 2017 he won the 5th stage of the Tour de France 2017 , which ended with a mountain finish in Planche des Belles Filles . On the 12th stage he took over the yellow jersey from Chris Froome , but had to give it up again after two stages.
In March 2019, Fabio Aru had to undergo surgery because of a narrowed hip artery, which is why he was unable to compete in the Giro d'Italia .
