Giovanni Visconti (born January 13, 1983 in Turin ) is an Italian cyclist who was three times Italian road champion of the elite and won the overall ranking of the UCI Europe Tour , was two-time stage winner and one time winner of the mountain classification of the Giro d'Italia .
Career
In the U23 category, Visconti became the 2003 European and Italian street champion. He also won u. a. the GP Kranj , the U23 edition of the Tour of Flanders and stages in the Giro della Toscana of the U23 and the Giro delle Regioni . At the UCI Road World Championships in 2007 , he finished seventh in the U23 road race .
In 2005 he received his first regular contract with an international cycling team , the Italian UCI ProTeam Domina Vacanze . In 2006 he won the Coppa Sabatini for the German successor team Milram .
In 2007 and 2008 Visconti drove for the Belgian ProTeam Quick Step . He won his first Italian championship title in 2007 and repeated his victory at the Coppa Sabatini . At the Giro d'Italia 2008 he wore the overall leader's pink jersey on eight stages , but had to hand over the lead to Gabriele Bosisio on the 15th stage and finally finished 42nd. In autumn 2008 he won the French semi-classic Grand Prix de Fourmies .
In 2009 Visconti joined the Professional Continental Team ISD (later: Farnese Vini) , with which he stayed for three years. During this time he won many one-day races , including the 2010 and 2011 Italian road championships and the semi-classic Coppa Agostoni , sections of stage races and the overall standings of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey . With these results he won the individual ranking of the UCI Europe Tour racing series in 2009 , 2010 and 2011 . A stage win at the Giro d'Italia 2011 was stripped of him due to a bump in the sprint with Diego Ulissi, who was later declared the winner .
At the end of 2012, Visconti was banned by the Italian Olympic Committee CONI for three months until January 7, 2013. He had admitted that he was advised on training issues by Doctor Michele Ferrari, who was banned for life as a coach and team doctor in Italian sport .
In his sixth participation, Visconti achieved his first stage win at the Giro d'Italia 2013 as a member of the Movistar team . After a long escape in bad weather conditions, he was able to break away from a breakaway group on a mountainous 15th stage on French terrain at the Col du Télégraphe and win the stage as a soloist at the Col du Galibier at the level of the monument to the deceased Italian professional cyclist Marco Pantani . Three days later he was also able to win the flatter 17th stage from Caravaggio to Vicenza as a soloist. Visconti also drove aggressively on the mountain stages during the 2015 Giro d'Italia and ultimately won the mountain classification .
In 2017 and 2018 Visconti drove for Bahrain-Merida and won the semi-classic Giro dell'Emilia in 2017 .
