Juan Manuel Gárate Cepa (born April 24, 1976 in Irun , Spain ) is a former Spanish cyclist and later sports director .

Career

Gárate became a professional in 2000 with the Italian cycling team Lampre . He won a stage at the Vuelta a España in 2001 and developed into a specialist in Grand Tours in the following years . He placed in the top ten four times at the Giro d'Italia . He finished fourth in 2002 , tenth in 2004 , fifth in 2005 and seventh in 2006 . In 2006 he also won a stage that was left to him by his fellow refugee Jens Voigt , as he did not take on any leadership work, and the mountain classification . At the Tour de France 2009 he won the mountain finish on Mont Ventoux against the runaway Tony Martin .

His greatest success in a one-day race came in 2005 when he won the Spanish championship. In addition, he was subsequently awarded the victory at the Clásica San Sebastián after the disqualification of Leonardo Bertagnolli .

Before the 2014 season, Garate did not sign a contract offered by his team Belkin that would have meant a 40% pay cut for him. He then successfully sued for employment under unchanged conditions, but was no longer used by his team. After the season he ended his career.

For the 2016 season he was hired as Sporting Director of the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team .
