course
At the beginning of the Giro, the wearer of the pink jersey changed frequently. During the 6th stage, the German driver Jens Heppner pushed himself to the top of the overall classification and was able to hold his own against climbers and time trial specialists for 10 days.
The decisive stage was the 17th stage. Because there the pink driving Cadel Evans broke in and Savoldelli was able to gain the decisive advantage over his competitors. During the time trial, the Italian was even able to extend his lead due to a risky driving style. Thus Paolo Savoldelli won 101 seconds ahead of the American Tyler Hamilton , without having won a stage.

Two favorites had to end the Giro early because they were convicted of doping . The Italian Stefano Garzelli , who won in 2000, was no longer allowed to appear for the 10th stage because he had doped.
After the 11th stage, the Italian Gilberto Simoni was suspended from his team because he tested positive for cocaine in April . In addition, Francesco Casagrande was excluded from the tour because he forced a competitor into the gang.
