Georg Totschnig
Georg Totschnig (born May 25, 1971 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian cyclist .
Athletic career
In 1989 Totschnig was Austrian junior champion in road races and time trials as well as second in the mountain championships.
In 1993 he switched from amateurs to professionals in the Italian team Polti . He won the Tour of Austria in his first year as a professional . He competed with this team in the 1994 Giro d'Italia and finished 13th. He confirmed this performance at the next Giro d'Italia in 1995 and finished ninth.
After three years at Polti, he switched to the 1997 Tour de France winner , Jan Ullrich , in his Telekom team . For this team he competed in the Tour de France three times and, after not being nominated for the tour in 2000, moved to the Gerolsteiner team .
As the captain of the Gerolsteiner team for stage races , he finished seventh in the 2002 Giro d'Italia and fifth in 2003 .
In the 2004 Tour de France he finished seventh. At first, Totschnig was unable to meet the expectations raised by this in the following Tour de France 2005 . He was far behind in the overall standings and was about to give up. The team management was able to persuade Totschnig to continue driving. On the 14th stage he attacked after seven kilometers. At the destination, the mountain arrival in Ax-3 Domaines , he was able to achieve the stage victory and thus his greatest career success with a margin of just under a minute.
At the end of the 2006 season Totschnig ended his cycling career. After his career Totschnig was founded in 2009 as part of human plasma - doping affair accused to improve performance EPO used to have.
Totschnig is married and has three children. His younger brother Harald Totschnig was also active as a cyclist until 2013.
Honors
At the end of 2005 he was voted Austrian Sportsman of the Year . He was the second cyclist after Richard Menapace to receive this award.
