Richard Menapace (born December 20, 1914 in Tramin in South Tyrol , † April 21, 2000 in Salzburg ) was an Italian - Austrian cyclist.

Athletic career

Richard Menapace rode his first bike races in Italy when he was young. In 1937 he won the Milan – Munich race and in 1938 took part in the Giro d'Italia , where he finished 13th. After the Second World War , Menapace took Austrian citizenship in 1948 and became Austrian road master in 1948. In 1949 and 1950 he was the winner of the Tour of Austria . In addition, he was “Großglocknerkönig” in both years, ie he was the first to cross the Großglockner on the stage.

Professional

In 1948 Richard Menapace decided to settle permanently in Austria and to find his family and professional life here. He opened a bicycle shop in Salzburg with his cycling colleague Franz Perfahl, in which his future wife also worked.

Honors

In 1949, Richard Menapace was voted Sportsman of the Year by Austrian journalists. He was the first ever athlete to receive this honor. Shortly before, he had already been honored by the mayor of Vienna with the city's sports badge. Here, too, it was the first time the prize was awarded.
