Stefan Maurer (cyclist)
Stefan Maurer (born October 6, 1960 in Schaffhausen ; † January 28, 1994 in Thailand ) was a Swiss cyclist .
Stefan Maurer started as an amateur for VC Hirslanden in the 1980s . In 1984 he won the Tour of Austria . In the same year he became Swiss runner-up in road racing and third in the championship in Zurich . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he finished twelfth in the street race.
The following year, Maurer turned professional and rode for the Cilo-Aufina cycling team . In his second race as a professional, he had a bad crash in Italy in February 1985 . From then on he sat in a wheelchair and had to end his career. On January 28, 1994, Stefan Maurer died in a diving accident in Thailand .
