Franz Deutsch (born August 25, 1928 in Graz , Styria ; † July 28, 2011 there ) was an Austrian cyclist .

Athletic career

Franz Deutsch is considered to be the "most dazzling figure of the post-war years in Austrian cycling". He was initially active as a football player at SK Sturm Graz . After he finished second in the Tour of Austria behind Richard Menapace in 1949 , he concentrated on cycling. He started ten times on the domestic tour: in 1951 and 1952 he won this tour and decided a total of twelve stages for himself, which is a record to this day (as of 2017). He won two stages in the International Peace Tour (1952 and 1953). In 1953 he traveled solo from Görlitz to Berlin , a record that was only broken in 2003 with a 200-kilometer solo drive by the Polish racing driver Bartosz Huzarski .

Deutsch later confessed that he had "doped" himself with "six beers with one Underberg each." His sports colleague Max Bulla therefore called him the "Dulliöh winner, spiced up with wine and beer".

Professional

After finishing his career as an athlete, he ran a coffee house in Vienna. Franz Deutsch died on July 28, 2011 at the age of 82.
