Steffen Kjærgaard
Steffen Kjærgaard (born May 24, 1973 in Tønsberg ) is a former Norwegian cyclist and cycling official.
Athletic career
Steffen Kjærgaard began his cycling career as a track cyclist . Between 1990 and 1993 he won seven Norwegian championship titles in different age groups and disciplines on the track; In 1993 he was also Nordic champion in the points race . In the same year he won the overall ranking in the Track Cycling World Cup (probably in the 1000 meter time trial ). In 1992 he started at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in the single pursuit , but retired in the first round.
In 1993, Kjærgaard won his first national title on the road , in the team time trial . By 2003 he was five times Norwegian champion in the individual time trial and won twelve Nordic titles.
From 2000 to 2003 Kjærgaard drove for the US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team and started in 2000 (89th place) and 2001 (101st place) in the Tour de France ; his team captain Lance Armstrong was the overall winner.
The Kongepokal (King's Cup), which is awarded for the best sporting performance at Norwegian championships, he received in 1996 and 1999.
doping
Until 2012, Kjærgaard was sports director of the Norwegian Cycling Federation ( Norges Cykleforbund ). In October 2012, he admitted to having doped with EPO and cortisone from 1998 to 2003 . He was immediately suspended as a sports director. Initially, there was a demand that Kjærgaard be banned from any sporting activity for ten years, but that demand was dropped. There was no criminal sanction, as the offenses are statute-barred under Norwegian law.
