The 87th Tour de France took place from July 1 to 23, 2000 and ran over 3661 km in 20 stages. 177 racing drivers took part, of which 127 were classified. Lance Armstrong was able to confirm his victory from the previous year at this event. One of the favorites, Jan Ullrich , who was not part of the 1999 tour due to injury, had to admit defeat.
On October 22, 2012, the UCI, the world cycling federation, announced the cancellation of all Lance Armstrong's results since August 1, 1998 due to continued doping during his career. This also included the American's victory at the Tour de France 2000. Successors to first place were not used .
Race course
After David Millar's victory in the relatively long prologue and two sprint successes by Tom Steels , a team time trial took place for the first time since the 1995 tour , which was won by the Spanish team Once, under team manager Manolo Saiz . The next stages were marked by several successful breakaway attempts. The Dutchman Erik Dekker managed the feat, which is almost impossible in modern cycling, of winning three stages as an outlier.
As in the previous year, Lance Armstrong attacked on the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees , finished second and took over the yellow jersey . At the legendary Mont Ventoux , Armstrong left the stage victory to the Italian climbing star Marco Pantani , who criticized the American's behavior as patronizing and a few days later achieved a real victory of his own in the mountains of the Alps. Armstrong only showed weaknesses on the last mountain stage to Morzine and had to let Ullrich and stage winner Richard Virusque go.
At the end of the tour, the world's largest stage race made a stop in Freiburg in southern Baden . The last time trial from Freiburg im Breisgau to Mulhouse was won by Armstrong, who had not yet won a stage, ahead of local hero Jan Ullrich . The German, clearly beaten, came second overall for the third time. Erik Zabel , meanwhile , reached his fifth green jersey and set a new tour record.
