geography

Morzine

The municipality is located on the Swiss border with the canton of Valais , 32 kilometers north of the Mont Blanc municipality of Chamonix . The nearest airport is in Geneva, a 90-minute drive away . In the city center, the Dranse de la Manche and Dranse de sous Saix rivers converge to form the Dranse de Morzine .

tourism

Thanks to the Alps, the town and Avoriaz have become a tourist center, especially for hikers, mountain bikers, golfers, skiers and cave explorers. This shows that nature and the environment are the focus for tourists, as well as for the community itself.

The community itself was often a transit point and destination of the Tour de France . As a rule, a mountain rating is then also carried out on one of the surrounding mountain passes or high altitude locations .

Morzine is the annual venue for the Spartan Race Sprint, Super, Beast and Ultra Beast.

The Morzine hysterics

In earlier times this place became known for the history of psychology through a certain form of hysteria . In this alpine village , which was still isolated in the 19th century, “there were numerous unmarried women, so that a specific female sociality developed. The church, which exerted a strong influence here, prohibited anything that looked like a festival or game. For sixteen years, from 1857 to 1873, the restriction, combined with the uneasiness of modern life, which was perceived as threatening, led to hysterical manifestations among the women of this village, the symptoms of which allow us to glimpse into female unhappiness in the 19th century.
