Saint-Paul-en-Chablais is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Saint-Paul-en-Chablais is located at 820  m , twelve kilometers east of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies), above Évian-les-Bains . The village extends in Chablais, in a panoramic position on the high plateau of the Pays de Gavot, around 450 m above lake level of Lake Geneva , in the Savoy Prealps.

The area of the 14.45 km² municipal area includes a section of the high plateau in central Chablais. The plateau slopes slightly to the north before turning into a wooded steep slope below Saint-Paul-en-Chablais. It is drained by various streams, including the Ruisseau de Montigny and the Ruisseau de Coppy , north to Lake Geneva. To the south, the municipality extends over a partly wooded broad ridge with the Lac de la Beunaz and four other small forest lakes to the Ugine , a right side stream of the Dranse d'Abondance. In the east, the municipal area extends to Mont Bénand , on which the highest point of Saint-Paul-en-Chablais is reached at 1265  m .

history

The place was called Cyriel until around the year 1000 . Around this time, Benedictine monks founded a priory here, cleared parts of the Pays de Gavot and made the land arable. The village was now named Saint-Paul. Another (temporary) name change was made to Bellevue when Savoy came to France in 1792. In order to better distinguish the village from other communities of the same name, the addition en Chablais was added in 1935 .

Attractions

The core of the church goes back to a building from the 11th and 12th centuries, but was later changed several times and contains baroque wall paintings. There are numerous chapels in the area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Paul-en-Chablais was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Évian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a road connecting Évian-les-Bains to the Vallée d'Abondance. Further road connections exist with Larringes and Bernex.
