geography
Landscape and settlement
The municipality is located in the valley of the Dranse d'Abondance and has an area of 58.84 square kilometers. An old road connection runs through the valley from Geneva via the Pas de Morgins in the Valais to Saint-Maurice . In the lower section of the Dransetal , because of the impassable gorge at Bioge in Reyvroz , the road makes a detour via Gavot , from where Evian is easy to reach, while another road leads via Féternes to Thonon-les-Bains .
The community includes several scattered individual settlements and hamlets.

history
In the early Middle Ages, Abondance belonged to the domain of the Lords of Féternes . In 1080 Ludwig von Féternes donated lands in the valley to the canons of the Savoy monastery in Saint-Maurice . Saint-Maurice first built a small mountain settlement with a chapel at what is now the municipality of La Chapelle d'Abondance and later a daughter monastery in Abondance.
In the early 13th century the Abondance Valley came under the rule of the Counts of Savoy , who were later elevated to dukes.
During the coalition wars , western Chablais belonged to France from 1792 to 1815 and then under the House of Savoy to the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont . In 1860, the population of Abondance also voted for Haute-Savoie to join France.
economy
A semi-hard hard cheese, the Abondance , comes from the Abondance Valley and is made from the raw milk of the local Abondance cattle .
Around 1980 the local economy, which used to be largely agricultural, was mainly geared towards tourism, initially for winter sports , and more recently for summer activities. The better known winter sports resort in the valley is La Chapelle-d'Abondance, a station in the cross-border winter sports area Portes du Soleil . The municipality of Abondance gained notoriety in the winter of 2007/2008 mainly because it was the first municipality in the Alps to abolish its entire ski area due to global warming. With the entry of an investor (construction of snowmaking systems), the operation of the ski lifts will resume in winter 2009/2010.
