Messery is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Messery is located at 428 m , 20 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on a hill above the south bank of Lake Geneva, about opposite the Swiss city of Nyon , on the west side of the Presqu'île du Léman, a wide peninsula that protrudes far into Lake Geneva.
The area of the 9.22 km² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva, the lakeshore is approximately 3.25 km. The community area extends from the flat lakeshore south-east over a gently rising slope to the plateau of the Presqu'île du Léman. Here are the vast forests of Bois de Parteyi and Bois Couti . The highest elevation is reached at 456 m at the height of Essert.
The hamlet of Essert ( 447 m ) belongs to Messery in a location with great views on the edge of the Presqu'île plateau. The neighboring municipalities of Messery are Chens-sur-Léman and Massongy in the south, Excenevex and Yvoire in the east and Nernier in the north.
history
The area around Messery was inhabited very early. The oldest traces come from two Neolithic settlements on the edge of the river bank . There was also a settlement here during Roman times .
The current place name is derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Masirius and means something like Masirius's estate. In the Middle Ages , Messery was located in an area disputed between the Counts of Faucigny, the Counts of Geneva, and the Dukes of Savoy.

With 2,134 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Messery is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades there has been a very strong growth in the number of inhabitants. There are numerous second homes outside the village near the lake shore.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Messery was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are numerous employed people who work in the surrounding larger towns and sometimes commute to Geneva.
The place has a small port. The lakeshore in La Pointe and Sous les Prés with bathing beaches and picnic areas is open to the public . Messery is off the major thoroughfares but is easy to get to from Douvaine . Further connections exist with Yvoire and Hermance .
