Veigy-Foncenex is a French twin community in the Haute-Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Veigy-Foncenex is located at 430  m , ten kilometers northeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies), close to the state border with Switzerland . The municipality extends in the Bas-Chablais plain, on the Hermance , south of Lake Geneva .

The area of the 12.99 km² municipal area includes a section of the Bas-Chablais plain with little relief. The plateau, which is around 60 m higher than lake level of Lake Geneva, is slightly inclined towards the northwest. It is drained by the Hermance and its side streams. To the east of the village are the vast forests of Bois Saint-Jean , Bois d'Avuilly and Bois des Arrales . The highest point is reached at 470  m at the western foot of Mont de Boisy.

The community consists of the districts Veigy ( 431  m ) and Foncenex ( 449  m ) and the hamlets of Crévy ( 425  m ) and Les Cabrettes ( 420  m ). Neighboring communities of Veigy-Foncenex are Chens-sur-Léman in the north, Loisin and Machilly in the east and the Swiss towns of Gy in the south, Corsier (GE) , Anières and Hermance in the west.

history

The area around Veigy-Foncenex was already inhabited in Roman times. Veigy is first mentioned in 1287 as Veigyer . This was followed by the names Vegier , Veigié , Veygier , Vegy and Veigier .

In the Middle Ages , the region around Veigy-Foncenex formed a bone of contention between the counties of Savoy, Faucigny and Geneva for a long time, until the entire area came to the Count of Savoy in 1355 . From 1536 to 1567 (Treaty of Lausanne) the area was under the rule of Bern. After Savoy was occupied by France in 1792, the then very small communities of Veigy and Foncenex were merged into a double community in 1793.

Attractions

The village church of Veigy was built between 1717 and 1729. The castles Château de Veigy and Château de Crévy should be mentioned among the secular buildings.

With 3,685 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Veigy-Foncenex is one of the medium-sized communities in the Haute-Savoie department. The population has been growing steadily for several decades, mainly driven by rising property prices in the neighboring canton of Geneva. Outside the old village centers, extensive single-family house quarters with a high proportion of Swiss people formed; In addition, masses of apartments for the upper income brackets are currently being built along the main street of Veigy in several extensive projects, which are also primarily aimed at high-earning cross-border commuters.

Economy and Infrastructure

Veigy-Foncenex was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses as well as construction and trading companies and in the center of Veigy there are several restaurants, bakeries, an organic shop and two hairdressers. A newly built shopping center with a large supermarket and numerous smaller shops outside the village center contributed to the closure of numerous shops in the center, as well as excessive shop rents; these are now used in part as pure shop window areas for real estate agents.

Many people in employment are commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns. Many of them are cross-border commuters who work in the city of Geneva.

In the center of Veigy there is a primary school and extensive sports facilities as well as a day-care center and a new multi-purpose building that houses a library with multimedia and internet equipment as well as group rooms and a cafeteria for activities for children, young people and senior citizens.

The village centers of Veigy and Foncenex are located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from the main Geneva - Thonon-les-Bains road. Other road connections exist with Tholomaz (connection to the main road towards Annemasse) and with Gy and Meinier in the canton of Geneva. Contrary to the remaining signs, the road to Meinier has been open around the clock since the beginning of 2007; However, the municipality of Gy reintroduced the closure of the border crossing to Veigy-Foncenex between 7.45 and 7.00 in December 2007 to avoid nightly through traffic.
