Bernex is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Bernex is located at 948 m , 15 kilometers east of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Chablais , in the high valley of the Ugine, which forms the eastern end of the Pays de Gavot, in the northern Savoy Alps .
The area of the 22.31 km² large municipality covers a section of the northern Chablais Alps. The heavily reliefed community area takes up a large part of the catchment area of the Ugine , which flows into the Dranse d'Abondance. In the Bernex area, the flat valley floor is around 700 m wide. The high valley is framed by Mont Bénand ( 1284 m ) and Mont César ( 1574 m ) in the north, Pic Boré ( 1974 m ) and Dent d'Oche (with 2222 m the highest elevation in Bernex) in the east and the ridge with the Tête des Trêches ( 1420 m ) and Mont Baron ( 1578 m ) in the south. In the far east, the alpine pastures at the Chalets d'Oche and the two mountain lakes Lac de la Case also belong to Bernex.
Community structure
In addition to the original village center, Bernex also includes various hamlet and hotel settlements, namely from west to east:
- Chez les Racles ( 890 m )
- Chez Maçon ( 918 m )
- Trossy ( 966 m ), in the Ugine valley
- Chez Buttay ( 1020 m ) on the southern slope of Mont Bénand
- Bénand ( 1115 m ) on the southern slope of Mont Bénand
- Creusaz ( 1120 m ) between Mont Bénand and Mont César
Neighboring municipalities of Bernex are Lugrin and Thollon-les-Mémises in the north, Novel in the east, Vacheresse and Chevenoz in the south and Vinzier and Saint-Paul-en-Chablais in the west.
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Ours was built around 1850. Also worth mentioning is the Grotte de Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, which is located near Maupas.

With 1,352 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Bernex is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades the population has grown steadily. Numerous single-family houses and holiday apartments were built outside the old village center.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Bernex was primarily an agricultural village. In the meantime the village has developed into a summer and winter sports station with various tourist facilities. The slopes south of Bernex are accessible by several mountain railways and ski lifts.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Access is via a connecting road from Évian-les-Bains or from the Dranse valley.
