Nernier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Nernier is located at 375 m , 22 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on the south bank of Lake Geneva, roughly opposite the Swiss city of Nyon , on the Presqu'île du Léman, a wide peninsula that protrudes far into Lake Geneva.
The area of the 1.82 km² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva, the lakeshore is around 2.5 km. The community area stretches from the flat lakeshore southwards over a gently rising slope and reaches its highest point at Essert at 425 m .
Neighboring communities of Nernier are Messery in the west and south and Yvoire in the east.
history
The area around Nernier was inhabited very early. The oldest traces come from a coastal settlement from the Neolithic . There was also a settlement here during Roman times .
Nernier is first mentioned in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages it developed into an important port and trading center on the south bank of Lake Geneva. The name is derived from the old French word néron (black) and probably denotes a place that was once covered by dense forest.
Attractions
Nernier has a closed late medieval village that is well worth seeing. The village church received its tower in the Italian style only in the course of the 18th century. There is a castle on the eastern edge of the village. A little south of the village is the Notre-Dame-du-Lac chapel from the 20th century.

With 380 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Nernier is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades the population has grown rapidly. There are numerous second homes outside the village near the lake shore.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Nernier was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are numerous commuters who do their work in the surrounding larger towns.
The place is now a popular day trip destination on Lake Geneva. It has a pleasure boat harbor and is connected to the other maritime communities on the French shores and Nyon by passenger shipping. Nernier is off the major thoroughfares but is easily accessible from Douvaine and Sciez .
