Culture and sights

Buildings

Ripaille Castle

Ripaille Castle is on the peninsula on the south bank of Lake Geneva. Count Amédée VI. had a castle built there around 1371 , of which there is no trace today. Around 1434, Duke Amédée VIII built a new castle with seven towers on the same site , which can still be seen today. It was massively damaged in the religious war, so it was built into a Carthusian monastery with a cell wing (individual cells for the monks), a church and buildings for the administration of the monastery property. After the French Revolution , the monastery was sold to the Napoleonic general Dupas as a national property. Although he and his descendants lived in the monastery and castle in the 19th century, they let the buildings fall into disrepair due to lack of finances. In 1892 Frédéric Engel-Gross , an Alsatian industrialist, bought the property.
