Armoy is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Armoy is located at 639  m , four kilometers southeast of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Chablais, in a panoramic location on a plateau south of Lake Geneva , at the northern foot of Mont d'Hermone in the Savoy Prealps.

The area of ​​the 4.95 km² large municipal area includes a section of the central Chablais. The municipal area takes up part of the high plateau south of Thonon-les-Bains (located at an average of 620  m ). It extends north into the forests of the Forêt de Thonon. The north-eastern and eastern delimitation of the area runs along the Dranse, which over time has carved a gorge-like valley almost 200 m deep into the plateau. On the hill south of Armoy, the highest point in the municipality is reached at 670  m .

The hamlet of L'Ermitage ( 559  m ) on a cleared island in the Forêt de Thonon belongs to Armoy . Neighboring communities of Armoy are Thonon-les-Bains and Marin in the north, Féternes in the east, Lyaud in the south and Allinges in the west.

history

From 1793 to 1870 Armoy and Lyaud formed the double community Lyaud-Armoy, and since then it has been a politically independent community again.

With 1295 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Armoy is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades there has been a continuous strong growth in the number of inhabitants. Outside the old village center, larger single-family houses were built. The settlement area of ​​Armoy has grown together with that of Lyaud.

Economy and Infrastructure

Armoy was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses. A large number of employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Thonon-les-Bains.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from Thonon-les-Bains via the D26 connecting road. Other road connections exist with Lyaud and Reyvroz.
