Maxilly-sur-Léman is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Maxilly-sur-Léman is located at 452 m , twelve kilometers east of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (beeline). The village extends in the Chablais, in a panoramic position on the lower northern slope of the plateau of the Pays de Gavot, on the Ruisseau de Coppy, around 80 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva .
The area of the 4.07 km² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva; the lakeshore line is approximately 1.5 km. From the lakeshore, the community area extends over the steadily rising slope into the forest area above the village. The slope is drained by the two brooks Ruisseau de Montigny and Ruisseau de Coppy to Lake Geneva. At the edge of the high plateau east of Saint-Paul-en-Chablais, the highest point of Maxilly-sur-Léman is reached at 830 m .
Maxilly-sur-Léman includes the settlements of Petite Rive ( 375 m ) at the mouth of the Ruisseau de Montigny and Torrent ( 375 m ) at the mouth of the Ruisseau de Coppy in Lake Geneva and Montigny ( 520 m ) on the slope above the village. Neighboring municipalities of Maxilly-sur-Léman are Lugrin in the east, Saint-Paul-en-Chablais in the south and Neuvecelle in the west.
history
The place name is probably derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Marcellius . In the 13th century Maxilly became the center of a small dominion.
Attractions
The village church dates from the 19th century. The castle has now been restored.

With 1,414 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Maxilly-sur-Léman is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades, thanks to the beautiful residential area, a continuous strong growth in the number of inhabitants has been recorded. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old village center.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Maxilly-sur-Léman was a predominantly agricultural village. Today it is above all an attractive place to live. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Évian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains.
The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from Évian-les-Bains. Further road connections exist with Neuvecelle and Lugrin.
