Marin is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Marin is located at 583  m , four kilometers east of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Chablais, in a panoramic position east of the Dranse valley, around 200 m above lake level of Lake Geneva .

The area of the 5.58 km² large municipal area includes a section of the central Chablais. The western border runs more or less along the lower Dranse, which emerges from a deep gorge into the Lake Geneva basin and flows into the lake with a large alluvial cone. From the Dranse, the municipality extends eastward over the relatively gently but continuously rising slope to the adjoining high plateau. At 660  m , the highest point in Marin is reached on the Fond des Prés.

Marin includes the hamlet settlements of Sussinges ( 460  m ), Moruel ( 520  m ), Marinel ( 546  m ) and Chullien ( 605  m ), all located on the panoramic slope of Marin. The neighboring municipalities of Marin are Publier in the north, Champanges in the east, Féternes and Armoy in the south and Thonon-les-Bains in the west.

history

The place name Marin appears in the documents as Marianum as early as 516 . It probably goes back to the personal name Maro and therefore means for the people of Maro . Marin was an independent political municipality until 1973, but was then merged with Thonon-les-Bains. Since 1995 it has been an independent municipality again.

With 1789 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Marin is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades the population has grown steadily. Outside the old village center, larger single-family houses were created, mainly due to the beautiful residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Marin was predominantly an agricultural village. Viticulture is practiced on the slope below Marin . The village is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

Today there are various local small businesses. A large number of employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Thonon-les-Bains.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the N5, which runs from Thonon-les-Bains to Évian-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Publier and Champanges.
