- Sigismund succeeds his late father Gundobad as the new king in the Burgundian Empire, and on the occasion of his takeover of power, the Eastern Roman Emperor Anastasios I gives him the honorary title of patricius . Since Sigismund is Catholic, the Burgundians are also switching from his father's Arian faith to Catholicism .
- between 516 and 522: The Danish king Chlochilaicus invades Gaul in the first historically documented attack by the Vikings . According to Gregory of Tours , he attacked and robbed the territory of the Austrasian Frankish king Theuderic I and took many prisoners. When the fleet wanted to move back, however, they had to wait for the tide. During this time, Theuderich's son Theudebert advanced with a strong army and a fleet, was able to kill the king and defeat the Danes in a naval battle and thus get the booty back.
